William Michael Morgan, Columbia, SC— William Michael Morgan, fondly known as “Doc,” passed away on Monday morning due to complications from decreased heart function and kidney failure. He was a cherished friend and beloved community member who brought joy and warmth to all who knew him. Doc was particularly known for his infectious smile, vibrant personality, and his love for sharing stories, which made him the life of every gathering.
Doc served honorably in the military, where he was discharged due to an injury. In his final months, he spent time at the VA hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, where he spent his last days in the hospice section, "Warrior’s Walk." During this difficult time, his close friends had the opportunity to visit and offer their support.
Despite his wishes for a funeral to celebrate his life, his passing has left a financial burden. Veterans Affairs did not cover the funeral expenses, and Doc did not have life insurance or family to help with the costs. A fundraiser has been set up by James Young to assist with the funeral expenses, with a goal to cover the service at Fort Jackson Cemetery, expected to be held the week of December 16th.
Shannon Purdy shared, “Our dear friend and neighbor, April Thomas, remained by his side. Any help is appreciated.”
The community has already shown support through donations, with contributions from Cynthia Shepard, Anonymous, Shannon Purdy, and Tricia Botts. The goal of $5,000 has been set to help honor Doc’s final wishes.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of William Michael Morgan. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and community during this difficult time.
