William Bumpa Coplen, Cincinnati, OH—It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the passing of William "Bumpa" Coplen. William, a beloved figure in the rescue community, died on Wednesday, October 9th, surrounded by family and close friends. He is remembered not only for his loving nature but for his tireless efforts in saving countless animals throughout his life.

William had recently faced significant health challenges. After receiving a liver transplant in August 2023, he celebrated his one-year "liverversary" this past August, a moment that brought much hope to his family. However, only a week later, William was diagnosed with cancer, and despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, his health deteriorated quickly. Just days before his death, William was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia, a complication he could not recover from due to his weakened immune system.

Renee Laguna, his daughter, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the extensive medical bills and funeral expenses left behind. The family’s financial situation became dire after William’s prolonged illness, and any contributions are greatly appreciated. So far, generous individuals such as Elizabeth Beckman, who donated $500, and others have helped raise funds to ease the financial burden.

William’s legacy extends far beyond his immediate family. His work with dogs that others had given up on has left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Becky Tenbrink Leonard, a fellow rescuer, reflected on her time with William, sharing, "They will forever be engrained in my heart because they were two of the first people who ever tried to help me save dogs. It wasn’t the easy dogs either. It was the ones that everybody left behind."
