Steve was 66 years old and had dedicated his life to serving others, both in his professional career and through his extensive community involvement.
Steve was a cherished figure in Nelsonville, well-known for his work with the Nelsonville Fire Department and his active roles in the Elks Lodge #543 and the Masonic Lodge. He also had a profound impact on local youth, volunteering as a coach and referee. After retiring from a successful career at Pepsi Cola in 2012, Steve continued to be a guiding light in the community, sharing his wisdom and kindness with all who knew him.
His passing leaves a deep void, not only in his family but also in the hearts of everyone who was touched by his generosity and spirit. Steve is survived by his loving wife, Janet (Groce) Mitchell, his children Tricia Wharton, Christina (James) Perry, Stephanie (David) Barley, Sara (Jarrett) Smith, and Jason Coen, whom he cherished as a son. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Reagan, Paige, Sara, Zoe, O’Rion, and Charlotte, and his siblings Michael Mitchell, Jan Mitchell, Rick Mitchell, and Doug Mitchell.
A fundraiser organized by his daughter, Tricia Wharton, has been set up to help cover funeral expenses. As of now, $175 has been raised out of the $8,200 goal, with contributions from generous donors including Tara (Bunting) Dodrill, Jenny Spencer, Justin Booth, and Margaret Wend. Calling hours for Steve will take place on Thursday, August 22nd, at Cardaras Funeral Home from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm. His funeral will be held on Friday, August 23rd, at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, where the community will gather to pay their final respects to a man who gave so much to those around him.
