Shonto, AZ — Vernon Kee Wagner Jr. tragically passed away on October 4, 2024. He was only 22 years old. Vernon, a cherished son, brother, uncle, nephew, and Cheii, was deeply loved by his family and community. His sudden passing has left his family and friends in a state of shock and profound grief.
Born on April 10, 2024, Vernon was the seventh of ten children born to Vernon Kee Wagner Sr. and Rena Barlow of Shonto, Arizona. He belonged to the Tódiicinii clan, born for Áshihii, and was known for his kind-hearted nature, humility, and protective spirit.
Vernon had recently started working at a local car wash in Kayenta and was excited to begin his journey of hard work and responsibility. Despite the modest nature of the job, he was grateful for the opportunity and would often hitchhike to and from work. His life was cut short in a hit-and-run accident on the evening of October 4. Though first responders did everything they could, Vernon passed away at the scene.
The Wagner family, led by his sibling Renalda Wagner, has set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs of Vernon’s services and support the family during this difficult time. Donations are being accepted online through GoFundMe or via Zelle and CashApp. So far, the fundraiser has received a contribution from Justina Saganitso, who donated $10.
Vernon will always be remembered as a humble, active, and supportive person who was ready to do anything for those around him. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him. As the community mourns this tremendous loss, Vernon’s memory will be cherished forever.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Wagner family, and we offer our deepest condolences to all who loved Vernon. May they find strength and peace during this heartbreaking time.
