Valeria Dale Laye Dean, Greenville, SC— The community mourns the loss of Valeria Dale Laye Dean, who passed away on October 10, 2024. At 74, Dale, as she was affectionately known, was an incredible woman who lived a life full of love, adventure, and an independent spirit. She was the mother of three children and the proud grandmother of seven.
Known by the nickname "Prairie Dog" to her friends, Dale was celebrated for her humor and kindness. She graduated from Parker High School in 1968 and later earned a degree in early childhood education from Clemson University. Dale’s parents, Lieutenant Colonel Maurice C. Laye and Jeanette Harvell Laye, raised her and her sister Janice in Greenville. Sadly, her only sibling, Janice, passed away in 2012, leaving Dale as the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In August 2019, Dale suffered a series of strokes, including two hemorrhagic strokes, which left her unable to speak, walk, or care for herself. For the last four years of her life, Dale was cared for by her daughter Abigail, who devoted herself to managing her mother’s long-term condition. Despite attempts at rehabilitation, Dale’s progress was cut short due to insurance limitations, placing a heavy burden on her family.
To honor Dale’s memory and give her the farewell she deserves, a fundraiser has been organized by her son, Talon Dean. The family is asking for support to cover funeral expenses, including burial and graveside services, to ease the financial strain during this difficult time.
Valeria Dale Laye Dean will be remembered for the light, love, and joy she brought into the lives of everyone who knew her. The family is incredibly grateful for any contributions that will help them celebrate her life and give her a fitting tribute.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Valeria Dale Laye Dean’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this challenging time.
