Valentine James Kealaiki, Molokai, HI— Valentine James Kealaiki, fondly known as "JR," passed away on November 1st, 2024. He was 81 years old. JR was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, known for his unwavering faith and love for his church, Jesus Coming Soon. He was described by his family as a kind and gentle man, admired by everyone who knew him.
JR had been battling prostate cancer for some time, and although he had shown signs of improvement, his health took a sudden turn. On October 20th, 2024, he was hospitalized after a fall and later transferred to a care facility on O’ahu. Despite this, his family was hopeful, believing that he was recovering. Tragically, JR passed away unexpectedly at the care facility on November 1st.
His passing has left his family heartbroken. JR’s son, Aaron, is now facing the overwhelming task of arranging funeral services for his father. A fundraiser, organized by JR’s niece, Helene Ozaki, has been set up to help cover the anticipated $15,000 in funeral expenses, as JR did not have life insurance or pre-arranged funeral plans. The family is also hoping to use some of the funds to bring JR’s grandchildren and great-grandson from Utah to Molokai for the funeral, as they were unable to visit before his passing.
The outpouring of support from the community has been a source of comfort during this difficult time. Donations have been received from friends and family, including Ui Kalani, Lady Lynn Castillo, Jamie Winfrey, and others.
