Tony Velo, Suwanee, GA — The community is mourning the loss of Tony Velo, who passed away on Sunday, July 14th, 2024. He was 26 years old. Tony was a cherished son, brother, and friend, known for his positivity, kindness, and resilient spirit despite lifelong health challenges.
Tony was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis type 1 at 9 months old, leading to numerous medical struggles, including five separate year-long chemotherapy treatments and blindness due to optic nerve tumors. Despite these hardships, Tony remained upbeat and devoted to his faith and life. He was a beloved member of the Suwanee and North Gwinnett communities, deeply impacting everyone he met with his compassion and joy.
Tony was pursuing a degree in Special Education at Georgia Gwinnett College, aiming to educate senior adults on using technology despite vision impairments. His future was bright until he was suddenly hospitalized on June 22nd, 2024, due to a severe medical emergency. A large mass in his cerebellum caused severe hydrocephalus, and a subsequent discovery of an aggressive tumor in his chest cavity led to a collapsed lung and immense pressure on his heart. Tony passed peacefully at Emory Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
The Velo family, including his parents Cathy and Leo and his brother Andy, are devastated by Tony’s unexpected passing but find solace in their faith. They are comforted by the belief that Tony is now at peace, seeing the face of Jesus with renewed eyesight.
A fundraiser organized by Dawn Carr has been set up to support the Velo family during this difficult time. The funds will help cover funeral expenses, unexpected medical costs, and other needs. So far, $625 has been raised out of the $20,000 goal, with contributions from donors like Jill Howard, Kathy Bullock, and Greg Jones.
The community has shown immense support and shared heartfelt messages on Facebook. Maya Kirkpatrick wrote, "Anyone who had the opportunity to know Tony was so lucky. Tony was as sweet as they come, even back to when we were little kids. Always kind, funny, witty, wise, jubilant, and so much more. He radiated positivity, which is something this world is in need of. Extremely sad to see him go, but he has made a lasting impression on the lives he was a part of. Rest In Peace Tony." Pat Lowery added, "Condolences to the family and friends. May he Rest IN PEACE."
Tony’s memory will continue to live on through the love and joy he brought to those around him. His family and friends will cherish the moments they shared with him, finding comfort in the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
