Terry Kean Walter, a beloved member of the Mount Vernon, Ohio community, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024. Born on July 31, 1949, in Lancaster, Ohio, Terry was the son of Thomas L. and Betty M. (Cherry) Walter, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Theodore R. Walter. His passing has deeply affected his family, friends, and the many individuals whose lives he touched throughout the years.
Terry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Ann (Smith) Walter, as well as their four children: Kirstin Walter, Matthew (Laura Booth) Walter, Michael (Sam Bartram) Walter, and Marcus (Jenny) Walter. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Elizabeth and Dominic Walter, and he will also be dearly missed by his sister, Betty Lynn Vaughan. His nieces, nephews, and extended family members, including Diane and Bruce Arbaugh, Jeff (Becky Lightfritz) Smith, Robin Romano, and Tammy Walter, mourn his loss as well.
Terry’s life was marked by his service to both his country and community. A U.S. Army veteran, he later worked in management at Anchor Hocking Glass Company in Indiana and MPW in Ohio, before eventually becoming the owner of Walter Industrial Services. Terry’s commitment to giving back to his community was unwavering. He was involved in numerous community organizations and served on several non-profit boards in Mount Vernon, earning the City of Mount Vernon Volunteer of the Year award in 2016. He was particularly proud of his work with the Escape Zone Youth Center, the Knox County Learning Center, and the Knox County Military Honor Guard.
A man of many talents and passions, Terry enjoyed woodworking, crafting with gourds, and watching John Wayne movies. He was known for his humor, generosity, and love of dogs, especially his own Sadie. Above all, he cherished his role as "Pa" to his grandchildren, spending time building treehouses, attending their school events, and simply enjoying life with them.
Terry’s family expresses their gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Gentiva Hospice during his final days. In his honor, they have requested that donations be made to The Escape Zone, a cause close to Terry’s heart. Matt Walter has organized a fundraiser to benefit this organization, continuing Terry’s legacy of helping young people.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Walter family during this difficult time. May Terry’s dedication, kindness, and love for his family and community continue to inspire all who knew him.
