Steven Harold Fleck Jr., a cherished member of the Altoona, PA community, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS, surrounded by his children and his loyal service dog, Wolvie. Born on June 3, 1971, to Steven H. Fleck Sr. and Rosemary A. Fotheringham, Steve lived a life full of adventure, compassion, and love, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Steve’s love for the outdoors was evident throughout his life, from his early days of hiking, hunting, camping, and mountain biking, to his passion for motorcycles. His dedication to the BMF Memorial King of Hearts Run, especially after his father’s passing in 2003, showcased his unwavering spirit. Even after suffering his first stroke in 2006, Steve completed a grueling 100-mile ride, a testament to his resilience and determination.
A graduate of North Mason High School and later Olympic College, Steve pursued a career in telecommunications, where he thrived as a lineman for over a decade. His love for Marvel and comics, a passion he shared with his grandchildren, was matched only by his enthusiasm for the Seattle Seahawks. Known for his generous heart, Steve was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer advice, or lighten the mood with his quick wit and humor.
Steve is survived by his three children—Taira, Courtney, and Dakota—and his nine grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and strength. He also leaves behind his chosen family, Larry and Nora Whatley, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. His parents and brother, Joshua James Fleck, preceded him in death.
A memorial celebration to honor Steve’s life and legacy will be held in Washington at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations toward his memorial or to the American Heart Association, in recognition of his father’s battle with heart disease.
