Bismarck, ND—The Bismarck community is in mourning following the tragic loss of Sterling Schaffner and his grandfather, Tony Schaffner. Sterling and Tony passed away recently in a heartbreaking accident on the river, a tragedy that has left their family and friends devastated.
Danielle Skarperud Schaffner, in a touching Facebook post, expressed the overwhelming grief she feels, stating, "We lost our precious Sterling and his Papa Tony to a horrible tragedy. I understand they couldn’t rescue each other that day on the river, but I know Jesus came and saved both of them. They loved each other in life and went to heaven together."
Danielle further shared that Sterling loved to watch storms, and as she wrote her post, it was raining, thundering, and lightning—something she believes is Sterling dancing and singing with his angels and Papa Tony.
The funeral for Sterling and Tony will be held on Monday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with visitation taking place on Sunday, August 4, from 5-7 p.m. at the same location.
A fundraiser has been organized by Alison Page to support the Schaffner family during this difficult time. So far, $2,485 has been raised out of a $25,000 goal, with contributions from 19 donors. Notable donations include $500 from Jeremy Levi and $100 from Jon Frommelt.
The community has shown an outpouring of love and support through numerous heartfelt messages. Jessica Miller expressed, "Love you all! Prayers for you all." Heather A Suarez added, "Beyond heartbreaking Danielle. I am so sorry for your huge unthinkable loss." Jenn Tufaro also sent her condolences, saying, "Oh Danielle, my heart breaks for you in this unimaginable loss. Sending so much love and light to your family."
