Solomon Anyuon, Rochester, NY—Solomon Anyuon passed away on October 9, 2024, following a cerebral brain hemorrhage at the age of 50. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many who knew him, both in Rochester and among his extended family in South Sudan and Uganda.
Solomon was one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan, who fled his village at age 14 due to conflict and violence. His journey took him through Ethiopia and eventually to a refugee camp in northern Kenya, where he spent 11 years. In 2001, he arrived in Rochester, NY, where he began rebuilding his life, despite facing significant health challenges, including vision loss and a stroke.
For 17 years, Solomon worked at Strong Hospital as an environmental cleaner and later at a nursing home on Rochester’s North Side. He also became a familiar face at the gardens on Reservoir Ave, where he helped community members with their gardening. Solomon was a dedicated member of St. Anne Church and remained closely connected to the South Sudanese community in Rochester.
Solomon’s contributions extended beyond his local community. After the recent deaths of his mother and brother, he continued to support his family in Africa, even sponsoring a cousin studying civil engineering at the University of Calgary. Despite the traumas and hardships he endured, Solomon lived his life with quiet dignity, remaining true to his roots and deeply committed to his family, faith, and culture.
A fundraiser organized by John McDermott has been established to assist with Solomon’s funeral and burial expenses. Any excess funds will support his struggling family members in South Sudan and Uganda. The funeral is expected to take place at the end of October or early November.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Solomon Anyuon during this time of loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
