Shihan Que— The community is heartbroken after the tragic passing of Shihan Que, a fourth-year mathematics student at the University of Alberta. Shihan passed away following a severe car accident that occurred on his 22nd birthday, September 29, 2024, while he was on his way to celebrate with friends. Despite being airlifted to the hospital, his condition was devastating, and he was declared brain dead shortly after the accident. Just a week later, he passed away.
Shihan was his parents’ only child, born under China’s one-child policy. His family lived modestly, working tirelessly to support his studies in Canada. His parents had pinned all their hopes on him, making his loss even more unbearable. Due to the global pandemic, Shihan had not seen his parents in nearly six or seven years, and his mother had just recently obtained a visa to visit him. Tragically, that reunion will never take place as they will now meet him under the most heartbreaking of circumstances.
Shihan’s friends, classmates, and family are all devastated by his sudden and tragic passing. His uncle, Ray, has set up a fundraiser to help the family cope with the overwhelming emotional and financial burden left by this loss. As the family navigates their immense grief, the community has begun to rally around them, though the fundraiser has yet to see its first donation.
We are deeply saddened by Shihan’s untimely passing, and our heartfelt prayers go out to his parents, family, and friends during this incredibly difficult time. May they find the strength to move forward, comforted by the love and support of those around them.
