Sefater Gbashi, Charleston, SC—The Charleston community is mourning the recent passing of Sefater Gbashi, a highly educated individual whose life was tragically cut short. Sefater and his family had relocated to the United States from Johannesburg, South Africa, in June 2023, with hopes of starting a new life and career. He had recently embarked on a prestigious postdoctoral program with the FDA/USDA, focusing on his passion for food safety, food quality, and analytical chemistry.
Sadly, shortly after beginning his new position, Sefater began experiencing health issues that were initially believed to be related to the stress of moving. However, after undergoing medical tests, it was discovered that he had developed hepatocellular carcinoma, a severe form of liver cancer. Despite initial treatment plans involving immunotherapy and radiation, his condition rapidly declined, leading to his untimely passing.
Sefater leaves behind his wife, who is now a widow and a new mother to their six-month-old baby. As an immigrant on a green card from Africa, she now faces the immense challenges of navigating life in a new country without her husband, who was the family’s main provider.
A fundraiser organized by Sarem Targuma has been established to support Sefater’s widow and child during this challenging time. The fundraiser has raised $2,830 out of a $25,000 goal, with contributions from 19 donors. Among those who have contributed, Elizabeth Hester made the largest donation of $700, while Yetade Alade recently donated $200. Alice M Hancock was the first to donate with a $25 contribution.
Elizabeth Hester Ballet, a friend of Sefater’s widow, shared her thoughts on Facebook, urging others to support the family. She expressed deep concern for her friend, emphasizing the difficulties of being a highly educated immigrant widow with a young child in a new country.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Sefater Gbashi. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
