Wilmington, DE—Sara D. Thompson passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE, surrounded by her loving family. Sara, aged 95, was a beloved member of the Wilmington community, known for her kindness, strong will, and unwavering faith in God.
Sara was born to Joseph and Mary DeShong on April 25, 1929, the youngest of their six children and their only daughter. She spent her life in Wilmington, where she attended Wilmington High School and later the University of Delaware. In 1946, she married her husband, George E. Thompson, who passed away in 1993. Together, they had three sons.
Sara’s devotion to her family and her faith was central to her life. She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Church in Wilmington, where she taught Sunday school and played piano for the congregation. Her love for music extended to piano lessons, which she joyfully gave for many years.
Her family was at the heart of everything she did. She found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Sara also had a love for classical music, cowboy movies, and murder mysteries, simple pleasures she enjoyed in her later years.
Sara’s passing leaves a deep void in the lives of those who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband, George, and two of her sons, John and Joseph. She is survived by her devoted son, James D. Thompson, her daughter-in-law and caregiver Shirley A. Thompson, and her daughter-in-law Robin Thompson. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, including George E. Thompson, Daniel M. Thompson, Holly Thompson Lea, Julie A. Thompson, Jesse D. Thompson, and Bradley Pierce, along with fourteen great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A fundraiser, organized by her granddaughter Holly Lea, has been set up to help with Sara’s final expenses. The community has already shown their support through donations, including contributions from Jeremy Hall, Deron Cox, Gary Ventresca, and Horace & Brenda Cole.
Sara D. Thompson’s legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her faith and love will be remembered as a beacon of hope and strength.
We offer our thoughts and prayers to the Thompson family during this difficult time. May Sara rest in peace and may her family find comfort in the memories they shared.
