Ruth Franklin, New York, NY — The community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Ruth Franklin, who left an indelible mark on countless lives. Ruth was a cherished mother, sister, and community member known for her compassionate spirit and unwavering dedication to helping others.
Her daughter, Sabine Franklin, has organized a fundraiser to honor Ruth’s memory and support her final journey. The goal is to raise $25,000 to cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and other costs. So far, $500 has been raised through the generous donations of two supporters, who preferred to remain anonymous, contributing $300 and $200.
Ruth Franklin (née Borgella) was born on October 27, 1946, in Ouanaminthe, Haiti. She was the middle child in a family that valued education, a rarity for the time and place. Despite the barriers faced by educated Haitians, Ruth’s determination led her to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
In 1975, Ruth traveled to Montreal, Canada, with a group from the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) ministry, where she worked to raise funds for her church. Her journey eventually brought her to Boston and then to New York City, where she lived for nearly 50 years. Ruth earned her GED and a nursing degree, embarking on a 35-year career at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where she provided care to thousands of New Yorkers.
Ruth married Marc Franklin in 1980, and they raised two children, Marc Jr. (who passed away in 2019) and Sabine. After retiring, Ruth dedicated her time to supporting the Haitian and SDA communities, assisting families, and funding educational and business opportunities for women in Haiti. Her contributions extended to French-speaking SDA churches in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Haiti.
Ruth’s memorial service will be held at Maranatha French SDA Church, and she will be laid to rest at Rockville Cemetery. She is survived by her sister, Denise, her brother, Eli, and her daughter, Sabine, along with a large extended family spread across Canada, Haiti, and the United States.
Ruth Franklin’s legacy of service, love, and faith will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her family and community are left to cherish the memories of a woman who gave so much to others.
