His passing follows a difficult period of approximately two and a half years during which he faced health challenges after suffering two strokes. Throughout this time, his devoted wife, Vanessa, provided unwavering support, having retired early to care for him at home. The love and assistance of his family, including his friends, children, grandchildren, and siblings, played a crucial role in ensuring he spent his last years peacefully.
Robert’s life was marked by service and passion. He was a proud Navy veteran who served in Vietnam from 1972 to 1974 and again from 1977 to 1979, receiving an honorable discharge. He was also a dedicated Iron Worker with Local 395, bringing his skills and hard work to the community. Beyond his career, Robert was known for his love of fishing and his welcoming spirit, often inviting friends, family, and even the mailman to his cherished lake house.
The Burns family is seeking financial support to cover funeral expenses not fully met by the assistance from the Iron Worker Union. KayLee Cooper has organized a fundraiser to help with these costs. The community is invited to pay their respects at Robert’s wake, which will take place on Sunday, October 13, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, October 14, at Reese Funeral Home, with the burial to follow at Blake Cemetery in Portage.
