Richard Stephen Newport, a former employee of both the Hautapu Cheese factory and Fonterra Dairy company in Hamilton, NZ, passed away on the morning of Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at the Wilson Carlisle rest home. He is remembered fondly by his loved ones and those who knew him during his long working life and his final years.
Richard, who spent 12 years at Hautapu Cheese and another 15 years at Fonterra, was known for his hard work and dedication. In addition to his full-time employment, he also took on lawn mowing jobs to support his family. However, the pressures of life, combined with his battle with bi-polar depression, eventually led to a mental breakdown and the breakdown of his marriage, which he always regretted. Despite these challenges, Richard left his assets to his former wife and continued to support his children financially whenever possible.
In 2013, Richard met Tracey Wallace, who became a close friend and supporter during a difficult time. Tracey, having escaped a dangerous relationship, found comfort in Richard’s company, and over the years, they became inseparable. Tracey cared for Richard, ensuring he attended his doctor’s appointments and managed his daily life. Richard became like a grandfather to Tracey’s young grandson, Xander, leaving a lasting impression on their family.
Due to financial constraints, Tracey has taken on the responsibility of covering Richard’s funeral expenses, which have been difficult for her to manage. She has worked full-time as a kitchen supervisor for over 26 years in various rest homes, but the costs of the cremation and other funeral arrangements have proven overwhelming. To honor Richard’s memory, a fundraiser has been organized by Taniela Nuku, a close friend of Richard since 2013, to help with these expenses.
At the time of writing, $100 AUD has been raised out of the $5,000 target, thanks to the generosity of Taniela Nuku. The community is encouraged to contribute to the fundraiser and help ease the financial burden on Tracey.
