Ramona "Mona" A. Sandberg, age 66, of Rhinelander, WI, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Born on October 12, 1957, in Rhinelander, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Phyllis (Bruyette) Towne. Mona faced a lifelong battle with type 1 diabetes, which she was diagnosed with in 4th grade. Her condition limited her participation in many school activities, but she remained resilient throughout her life.
Mona married her husband, Kim Sandberg, on September 6, 1975, and the couple shared 49 years of marriage. Over the years, Mona’s health challenges increased, as she had been undergoing dialysis treatments three times a week for several years. She also suffered from complications related to a mini stroke and a heart attack, which led to triple bypass surgery. Mona also dealt with Sjögren’s syndrome, adding to her ongoing health struggles.
Despite her health challenges, Mona worked in various roles throughout her life. She held positions in bartending, retail, and customer service, spending more than 18 years working at Walmart, a job she truly enjoyed. In her earlier years, Mona was an active participant in pool and dart leagues and played softball. When her health allowed, she enjoyed camping with her sister and brother-in-law, as well as playing cards and online poker.
Mona is survived by her husband, Kim Sandberg; her daughter, Sabrina (Craig) Redmond; her son-in-law, Alex Mendoza; and her brothers, Allen Towne and Randy Towne. Her sisters, Rose Fintelmann, Kathy (Ed) Johnson, Valerie (Gary) Yamauchi, and Debbie (John) McMeekin, also survive her. Mona leaves behind three grandchildren, Yvonne, Lara, and Chase Redmond, as well as a brother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Phyllis, her daughter, Candy Andres, her half-brother, Shane Klemm, and her brother-in-law, Lee Fintelmann.
A fundraiser has been organized by Kathy Johnson in memory of Mona to support the family during this difficult time. The community is encouraged to offer their support as the Sandberg family navigates this painful loss.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Mona’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this challenging time, and may they find comfort in the love and memories they shared with her.
