Owen Wayne Smith, Haughton, Louisiana — The community mourns the loss of Owen Wayne Smith, fondly known as "Smokey," who passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 14, 2024, in Burlington, Colorado. Born on September 16, 2005, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Owen was only 18 years old. He was the beloved son of Rachael Lynn Duet Rhame and Chris Wayne Smith.
Owen graduated from Lakeside High School in Sibley, Louisiana, in May 2023 and continued his education at Northwest Lineman College in Denton, Texas, where he graduated in January 2024. His passion for his career led him to Burlington, Colorado, where he began his work as a lineman.
Owen was an avid soccer player from the age of 3 and also excelled in cross country and track. He was active in 4H chapters in Caddo and Webster Parishes, as well as the 4H Shooting Sports Team. His love for the outdoors included fishing, hunting, and riding horses.
He is survived by his mother, Rachael Rhame, and her husband Gregory; his father, Chris Smith, and his wife Lisa; and a large extended family including his siblings Ethan Von Zynda, Austin Smith, Gregory Thomas Rhame Jr., Emily Murphree, and Ashley Rhame. Owen also had a special bond with his best friend and love, Haley Sandlin, as well as his great-grandparents, grandparents, godparents, and many friends.
A visitation for Owen "Smokey" Wayne Smith will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home & Park, 601 Highway 80 East, Haughton, Louisiana. A Celebration of Life service will follow on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the same location, with a graveside service immediately afterward.
A fundraiser has been organized by Ryan Wilhelm to help Owen’s family cover expenses related to his sudden passing. The goal is to raise $10,000, and contributions can be made through the GoFundMe platform.
