Nettye Handy Evans, Brunswick, GA— Nettye Handy Evans passed away on December 15, 2024, leaving a profound impact on her family, friends, and community. She was a pioneering figure, known for her contributions to education and her strong presence in various organizations.
Born and raised on Sapelo Island, Georgia, Nettye was the first African American faculty member at Delaware Technical and Community College. She also taught at Dover Air Force Base and Delaware State University, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education. Her leadership extended to her involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and The Links Incorporated.
Nettye was also known for her deep commitment to family. She is survived by her son, Walter (Chuck), who is facing serious health challenges, including end-stage renal failure and requiring dialysis three times a week. The family has set up a fundraiser to help with the transportation of Nettye’s body back to Delaware, where she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Walter Sr., and to assist with funeral expenses. Additionally, the fundraiser aims to provide support for Chuck as he navigates new living arrangements.
The fundraiser, titled “Honoring Nettye: A Pioneer’s Final Journey,” has already raised $500 through generous donations from friends and family, including Mark Spain, Travis Bryant, and others.
The community continues to mourn the loss of a trailblazer whose impact will not be forgotten. Our hearts go out to Chuck and the entire family during this difficult time.
We extend our deepest sympathies and offer our prayers for peace and comfort for the Evans family.
