Mel Wheeler, Sheffield—The Sheffield community is mourning the loss of Mel Wheeler, who passed away on July 26, 2024, at the age of 53. Mel’s death came after a short battle on the Neuro Critical Care Unit. Her passing is a significant loss to her family, friends, and colleagues at the NHS, where she worked as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) for over 20 years.
Mel Wheeler leaves behind two teenage children, her parents, brother, and partner, who are all grappling with her unexpected death. Tragically, her children also lost their father earlier this year, making this period incredibly difficult for them.
Lauren Herring, a staff nurse on Ward 16 Stroke Unit in DRI, has organized a fundraiser to help cover the funeral expenses and provide some financial relief to Mel’s family. The goal is to raise £5,000, and so far, £310 has been raised from 13 donations. Notable contributions include £40 from Maria Johnson, the top donation, and £20 from Tracey Robinson, the most recent donor.
Mel’s funeral is scheduled for August 19, 2024, at Barnby Dunn Crematorium at 12 midday, followed by a wake at Rossington Club. The funds raised will primarily go towards the funeral expenses, and any excess will be used to support Mel’s children during this difficult time.
The community’s support through donations and heartfelt messages has been a source of comfort for Mel’s family. The love and dedication Mel brought to her role in the NHS and her impact on those around her will be remembered and cherished.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Mel Wheeler’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this challenging time.
