Mark Irwin, Urmston, UK — The Urmston community is mourning the loss of Mark John Irwin, who passed away on June 23, 2024. Mark was a dedicated father to his sons, Jack and Oliver Irwin, and a cherished member of the AFC Urmston Meadowside (Meds) football club.
Mark played a significant role in the football journeys of his sons, starting from when Jack and Oliver joined Meds at the age of five. His involvement extended beyond his own children, as he contributed to the development of many other young players in the community. Despite his success as a businessman, Mark found time to volunteer as a coach, earning his FA Level 2 coaching badge and regularly attending coaching courses to pass on the best information.
Known for his preference to support rather than lead, Mark served as an assistant manager, where his advice and sponsorship of team kits were highly valued. Even after his sons moved on to new clubs, Mark remained dedicated to Meds, helping to establish a thriving Pan Disability team that grew from 6 to over 35 children. Coaching these children on wet Monday nights was a highlight of his week.
A fundraiser organized by AFC Urmston Meadowside has been launched to honor Mark’s memory and support his passion for grassroots football. The funds will go towards building a new Astroturf pitch at Lees Field, ensuring quality facilities for the club’s 80 teams and 1200 players. As of now, £235 has been raised out of the £1,000 target from 8 donations.
The community’s support has been heartfelt, with contributions from individuals like Kirsty Ridgway, David Scragg, and Jason Gregory. The legacy of Mark Irwin will continue through the enriched lives of local children who benefit from the improved facilities and the spirit of dedication he embodied.
