Mario Demaio, Dumbo, NYC Community Mourns the Passing of a Beloved Local Figure

Mario Demaio—affectionately known as "Super Mario"—has passed away, leaving the Dumbo community in Brooklyn deeply saddened by the loss of a true friend and local icon. Mario, a beloved resident and long-time building superintendent, was a central figure in the neighborhood’s evolving identity, known for his street smarts, big heart, and his signature NYC swagger.

Having lived in Dumbo long before it became a bustling neighborhood, Mario was a fixture in the community. He was well-known for his warmth, humor, and protective nature toward his friends and neighbors. His love for life and the neighborhood was reflected in the way he connected with people, and he was often seen spending time with family and friends, especially during summer gatherings on Front Street.

In recent years, Mario battled cancer, a challenge he faced with strength and resilience. Carol Sun, a close friend of Mario, has organized a fundraiser to help cover the costs of his burial. Contributions have already begun pouring in from the community. Generous donations from friends such as Barney Robinson, who contributed $1,250, and others like Jose Pinheiro and Jeremy Leech, show just how much Mario was loved and respected.

For those wishing to honor Mario, visitation will take place on Sunday, October 27th, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cobble Hill Chapel, followed by burial on Monday, October 28th, at Evergreen Cemetery. A reception will be held that same evening at Superfine Restaurant, a fitting venue to celebrate the life of a man who brought so much joy to his community.
