Maria and Anwar had no extended family in Texas, leaving their children in a vulnerable position. In the aftermath, Anwar’s brother, Abuelfotoh Awing, stepped in to take guardianship of the children. He traveled to Amarillo to make funeral arrangements and legal preparations for their care. The children, now under his guardianship, have recently relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where they will live with Abuelfotoh, his wife, and their four children.
The financial burden on the family is substantial, with costs related to funerals, legal fees, flights, and education for the children, as they are considered foreign students in Canada. Abuelfotoh Awing has organized a fundraiser with a goal of $25,000 to help cover these expenses, which he had to take out as an emergency loan in the United States. As of now, no donations have been made, and the family is appealing for support during this difficult time.
