Maria C Azurdia De Perez, affectionately known as "Mary," passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, at the age of 85 after a brave battle with stage 5 diabetes and kidney disease. Originally from Guatemala City, Maria moved to Boston in the late 1960s, where she continued to impact the lives of those around her with her loving and generous spirit.
Maria was a devoted sister, wife, aunt, and godmother. Though she had no children of her own, she embraced the role of a second mother to her nieces and nephews, including Nora Beatrice Pérez-Ruiz, Mario Ruiz, Xiomara Escobar, and Wendy Escobar. Her loving presence extended beyond her immediate family, as she also cherished the role of grandmother and great-grandmother.
Her life was marked by a strong commitment to service, volunteering for many years at Maria de Los Angeles Catholic Church in Cambridge. She also provided support through her involvement with AA, offering guidance to those in need. Maria’s unwavering dedication to her family and community will forever be remembered by those who knew her.
In the wake of her passing, tributes have poured in from friends and loved ones. Funeral services for Maria will be held at P.E. Murray-F.J. Higgins Funeral Home in West Roxbury, MA, on Sunday, October 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A mass will follow on Monday, October 28, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Jamaica Plain, MA, with interment at Milton Cemetery in Milton, MA.
