Layla Elizabeth So, Pearl River, NY—The community is heartbroken following the passing of 15-year-old Layla Elizabeth So on August 7, 2024. Layla was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend whose life touched many, and her loss is deeply felt by all who knew her.
Layla was a remarkable young woman, known for her intelligence, kindness, and vibrant spirit. She was a rising sophomore at Pearl River High School, where she excelled academically and was a High Honor Roll student. Layla was also an accomplished athlete, a key member of the Varsity Bowling Team, and a dedicated martial artist who was on her way to earning her black belt. Her love for scouting was evident in her achievements, as she earned the rank of Life Scout and was working toward becoming an Eagle Scout, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to her community.
For the past two years, Layla bravely battled Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a highly aggressive brain tumor. Despite the challenges, Layla’s strength and selflessness shone through, often putting others before herself. Her journey was a testament to her enduring spirit and the deep love she had for those around her.
To support Layla’s family during this difficult time, a fundraiser has been organized by Emily Brosnan. The funds raised will go toward covering funeral and burial expenses, medical bills, and lost wages. As of now, $100 has been raised toward the $50,000 goal.
The Pearl River community, along with Layla’s family and friends, will gather to celebrate her life at a viewing on Friday, August 9th, followed by a celebration of life service and a reception. Layla’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 10th, with internment at Laurel Grove Cemetery.
