Lawrence "Larry" Monroe, a beloved figure in both his family and community, has passed away alongside his wife Shirley in a tragic house fire that occurred in the early morning of September 17th, 2024, in Sacramento, California. Larry was a dedicated husband and father, known for his strong family ties and the love he carried for his Lakota heritage.

Larry Monroe, originally from the Rosebud "Sicangu" Tribe of Lakota, leaves behind a legacy of cultural pride and service. Raised in Rosebud, South Dakota, Larry was a Sundancer and Pipe Carrier, deeply rooted in traditional Lakota practices. He also served his country as a U.S. Army Airborne Special Forces veteran. His life later brought him to Sacramento, where he became a prominent advocate for Native Americans, focusing on drug and alcohol abuse prevention. He also held the position of Director at the Sacramento Indian Center and ran his own business.

Larry’s sister, Teresa Iyotte, has organized a fundraiser to help fulfill his final wish to be buried alongside their mother on the Rosebud Lakota Reservation. The family faces financial challenges due to the complicated nature of his passing, requiring special arrangements for his transportation and burial. They are calling on friends, family, and the community to support this effort during their time of grief.
