Lauren Alexis Whinery, Cape Coral, FL — The community of Cape Coral is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Lauren Alexis Whinery, who died on July 1, 2024, at the age of 20. Lauren was a promising student at The University of Alabama, majoring in Marketing with dual minors in Sales and Global & Cultural Perspectives. Her academic excellence earned her a place on the President’s List for the Spring Semester of 2024 with a perfect GPA of 4.0.
Lauren’s life was not only defined by her academic achievements. She was a cherished member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, where she was known for her kindness and inclusive spirit. Her sorority sisters remember her as someone who always made room for others and made everyone feel welcome. Lauren was also actively involved in Delta Sigma Pi, Professional Women in Communication and Business, Globe UA, and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.
She is survived by her mother, Janelle; father, Tom; brother, Hunter; and her beloved dog, Rizzo. The impact she had on her numerous friends and the community is immeasurable.
A fundraiser organized by Mark Reich has been established to honor Lauren’s memory through the Lauren Whinery Scholarship Fund. This fund aims to support a deserving student at the University of Alabama annually, benefitting both the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Prairie High School in Iowa, from where Lauren graduated in 2022.
The fundraiser has already seen heartfelt contributions from members of the community. Shelly Anselmo donated $100, Amy Godwin contributed $100, Jennifer Fell gave $25, Kiara Czegledy donated a generous $500, and Candie Levi added $50. So far, $1,335 has been raised out of the $50,000 goal, with donations continuing to come in.
The community has also expressed their condolences and support through touching Facebook posts. Charles L. Thompson and Gerald Shepherd from the Cedar Rapids Prairie Alumni group are among many who have shared their heartfelt messages.
Lauren’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and academic excellence will continue to inspire and empower others through the scholarship fund established in her name.
