Larry Odland, Sioux Falls, SD—Larry Odland passed away recently, leaving the community in deep sorrow. Known for his genuine and authentic nature, Larry had been living with Muscular Dystrophy for the past 38 years, facing numerous challenges with unwavering grace and a constant smile.
This year has been particularly tough for Larry and his family, with multiple health scares and significant medical expenses. In February, Larry was hospitalized for five days due to a collapsed lung. Despite the warning of a high recurrence rate, Larry faced the situation bravely and even quit smoking.
In July, Larry’s health took another downturn, and he was hospitalized for ten days. During this period, his wife Pam also suffered a severe accident, falling down a flight of stairs and sustaining major bruising and severe trauma to her right foot. Despite these hardships, both Larry and Pam managed to return home to continue their recovery.
One of the significant challenges Larry faced was the financial burden of maintaining and repairing his wheelchair, which Medicare does not fully cover. The cost of a new wheelchair and necessary accessories, such as backup batteries, was overwhelming. Additionally, Larry’s wheelchair-accessible vehicle required repairs, further limiting his mobility and confining him to his home for six weeks during the spring.
A fundraiser organized by Toni Seiner aimed to alleviate some of these financial burdens. As of July 29th, 2024, the community raised $10,150 out of a $25,000 goal, with donations from generous individuals like Georgeann Wamboldt and Tom Morgan.
Larry’s passing is a profound loss to his family and friends. The community’s support during these trying times highlights the impact Larry had on everyone around him.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Larry Odland’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
