Kevin Grossheim, Kabetogama, MN—The community of Voyageurs National Park is grieving the loss of Park Ranger Kevin Grossheim, who passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024, while bravely responding to a distress call on Namakan Lake. Ranger Grossheim, a beloved figure known for his dedication and heroic efforts, tragically lost his life after his boat overturned in rough waters while rescuing a family.
Grossheim, 55, was attempting to assist a family of three stranded near Birch Cove Island. While the family made it to safety, Kevin was reported missing. After a three-hour search, his body was recovered. His passing has left a deep void in the community, where he served as a ranger for over two decades.
His colleagues at Voyageurs National Park, including Superintendent Bob DeGross, expressed their sorrow, noting that Kevin was admired for his selfless commitment and dedication to his work. Kevin Grossheim had a long and distinguished career that began in 1993 as a seasonal ranger at Boston National Historical Park and led him to serve in various national parks before becoming a permanent fixture at Voyageurs.
Ranger Grossheim also contributed to his community by volunteering with the Kabetogama Fire Department, and his experience as a boat operator made him a valuable asset in the park’s operations. His heroic efforts to save others, even at the cost of his own life, will be remembered and honored by the many lives he touched.
Memorial services for Ranger Grossheim are still being arranged. In his honor, the American flag was lowered at national parks until October 9, as a tribute to his bravery and service. The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police has launched a fundraiser to honor his legacy, encouraging donations to support his memory.
We extend our heartfelt prayers to Kevin Grossheim’s wife, family, and all who loved him during this heartbreaking time. May they find strength in the outpouring of support from the community and park visitors.
