Kathleen Furtado, Acushnet, MA — The community is mourning the loss of Kathleen Furtado, who is about to be taken off life support at Beth Israel Hospital. Kathleen, a beloved wife and mother, has been battling cancer for many years, a result of a bad blood transfusion in her youth before rigorous blood testing was implemented.
Her husband, Ernest Furtado, and their children, Ryan Witkos, Ernie, Jeremy, Zachary, and Bethany Furtado, are deeply affected by her imminent passing. Kathleen’s illness has placed a significant emotional and financial strain on the family. Ernest has dedicated himself to her care, enduring many trips to Boston for tests, blood transfusions, and therapy. Despite a liver transplant on July 5, 2024, Kathleen went into cardiac arrest four times during surgery, resulting in severe brain damage.
A fundraiser organized by LuAnn Melanson has been launched to help cover Kathleen’s final expenses. So far, $125 has been raised out of the $11,000 goal, with contributions from generous donors like Scott Sears.
The community has expressed their condolences and support through touching Facebook posts. Carol Swanson and many others have shared heartfelt messages, offering comfort and prayers to the Furtado family during this difficult time.
Kathleen’s memory will live on through the love she shared and the strength she showed in her battle. Her family and friends will cherish the moments they had with her, finding solace in the legacy she leaves behind.
