Joyce Elizabeth Allen, lovingly known as "Betty," passed away peacefully at her home in Fort Ashby, WV, surrounded by her family on September 25, 2024. She was 96 years old. Betty’s gentle spirit, love for family, and dedication to her profession as a registered nurse have left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Betty was born on February 11, 1928, in Westernport, MD, the daughter of the late Lawrence Bartholomew Dunithan of Bayard, WV, and the late Maude Irene Swick of Cumberland, MD. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Raymond E Allen, with whom she shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a family rooted in love and support.
Throughout her life, Betty was dedicated to her career in nursing, where she made significant contributions in High-Level Care, Recovery, and Emergency services. She spent two decades at Gorgas Hospital in The Canal Zone, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues and patients alike. After her retirement, she continued her service in various hospitals in the Cumberland area, including Memorial Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital, and at the Dawn View Nursing Home. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her professional life, as she was also an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star while living in the Canal Zone.
Betty is survived by her two daughters: Kelly Allen of Fort Ashby, WV, and Christi Fletcher along with her husband Robert of Comfort, Texas. She was a cherished grandmother to Wendy Rodriguez, Angela Pentz, and Paul Will, and the proud great-grandmother of nine and great-great-grandmother of four. Her love for her family was boundless, and she will be remembered as the heart and soul of the Allen family.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Upchurch Funeral Home in Fort Ashby, WV, on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at noon, with a funeral service to follow at 1 pm, officiated by Pastor Loretta Brinker. Betty will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, where she will join her beloved husband, Ray.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for monetary donations to assist with funeral expenses. A fundraiser organized by her daughter, Kelly Allen, has been set up for this purpose, with kind contributions already coming in. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and love during this difficult time.
The Allen family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers from Mountain Hospice, especially Darla, for their compassionate care and support provided to Betty and her family in her final days.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Joyce Elizabeth Allen. May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in the loving memories they shared. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of sorrow.
