His sudden death has left his family and the community in deep sorrow as they grapple with the loss of a man who was widely cherished for his vibrant spirit, warmth, and generosity.
Joe was born on June 30, 1960, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Edward “Butch” and Rebecca “Tita” Kekoa. He grew up in Palolo and graduated from Farrington High School. Over the years, Joe became a beloved figure in his community, known for his willingness to always lend a helping hand. Whether it was offering a laugh, a shoulder to lean on, or just everyday assistance, Joe’s personality and kindness were felt by all who knew him.
At the time of his passing, Joe had been a proud member of the United Public Workers (UPW) Union for 15 years, working for the City & County of Honolulu’s Board of Water Supply.
He is survived by his wife Eunice M. Kekoa, children Barry Kekoa, Josh Kekoa, and Starr Kekoa, as well as his grandchildren Imriel, Jayden, Jayce, and Jademarie Kekoa. His siblings, Virginia “Kaui” Kamaunu, Edward “Eddie Boy” Kekoa, Michael Kekoa, Michelle “Uʻi” Arasato, and Darnel Kekoa, also mourn his passing.
In response to the unexpected loss, a fundraiser has been set up by Joe’s family to cover funeral and related expenses. As of now, the community has rallied together, with $1,425 raised out of the target amount.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Walter Enriquez Jr. shared the news of Joe’s passing, writing, "As most of you know by now, our big spirited and hearted Joe has been called home to Heaven." Many others, including Tita Kamaka, expressed their condolences, with Kamaka stating, "Our love and condolences to the Kekoa Ohana."
