John Deakin, Sedgwick, Community Mourns Beloved Family Member

John Deakin—The community of Sedgwick is in mourning after the recent passing of John Deakin on August 6th. John was a cherished father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, known for his dedication to his family and his love for the Lake District.

John leaves behind his wife, Joan, and his twin sons, Jonathan and Martin. He had a special bond with his granddaughters, Ebony and Brook, who will miss him dearly. John spent much of his career working with British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield in Cumbria, a place that ignited his love for the Lake District. After retiring, he and Joan moved to the village of Sedgwick, where they enjoyed the beauty of the fells with their Old English Sheepdogs.

A tragic fall in Kirby Lonsdale in August 2023 left John paralyzed. Despite his condition, his primary concern remained his family, always ensuring tasks were completed when they visited him. John fought bravely for a year before passing away.

John’s wish was to be laid to rest at Beetham Church, reflecting his deep connection to the Lakes. His family is organizing a fundraiser in his memory, supporting brain cancer research—a cause dear to John’s heart. Jonathan Deakin is leading the effort, with a goal of £300. As of now, £20 has been raised through the generous donation of an anonymous supporter.

The community’s outpouring of love and support is a testament to the impact John had on those around him. His family and friends will hold his memory close, finding comfort in the legacy he leaves behind.
