Joe was a proud veteran, having served in both the Korean War in the 1950s and the Desert Storm operation in the 1990s as part of the US Army and Army Reserve. His unique skills were evident throughout his life, especially in his work managing logistics aboard freighters, where his precision and attention to detail were legendary.
Beyond his military service, Joe was deeply committed to veterans’ affairs, dedicating his time and efforts to the Purple Heart Association, and supporting hospitals and nursing homes. He was also an active member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE). Joe held several leadership roles within the Elks, including serving as the Exalted Ruler and Secretary of the Wilmington Lodge, Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the East District of North Carolina, and ultimately as the President of the North Carolina Elks State Association. His contributions extended to supporting the NC Elks Veterans Home, NC Elks Camp, and the NC Elks Charitable Trust.
Joe’s passing has left his wife Barbara in a difficult financial position, as the costs of his extended illness and now the funeral and burial expenses have created an overwhelming burden. To help with these expenses, Steve Gunter has organized a fundraiser titled the “Joe Pettet Memorial Fund.” The goal is to raise $13,000 to cover the funeral and burial costs, which are expected to fall within that range.
