Janie Kathleen Keefe Gregory, San Pablo— It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janie Kathleen Keefe Gregory on Friday, July 26th. She was 72 years old. Janie, affectionately known as "Mama Jane," was a cherished member of the San Pablo community, recognized for her nurturing spirit and unwavering support for her family and friends.
Raised in Toledo, Ohio, Janie moved to California in 1971 with her parents and siblings, where she spent most of her adult life in the East Bay. In 1979, she married James Gordon Gregory, and together they had three children: Melissa, Katie, and James. Tragically, James passed away suddenly in 1983, leaving Janie to raise their children on her own. Despite this hardship, Janie dedicated her life to her family, becoming a stay-at-home mom and extending her care to nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children.
Janie’s life was filled with varied experiences, from working as a waitress and CNA to volunteering in mobile kitchens supporting firefighters. She also took joy in assisting her parents with community events at Salesian High School. Her love for mysteries, crime stories, and country music, alongside her devotion to the San Francisco 49ers, brought joy to her and those around her.
A fundraising page has been created by Ophelia Lauritzen to honor Janie’s memory and support her family during this difficult time. The goal is to raise $10,000 to cover her final expenses, medical bills, and recoup lost wages for her daughter Katie, who took unpaid time off work to care for Janie. Any additional funds will be divided among Janie’s children as an inheritance, in keeping with her wishes.
