Janet Marie Pedersen Sharp, a cherished resident of Hermiston, Oregon, passed away unexpectedly at her home on October 24, 2024. Janet, aged 65, was known for her kindness, love for nature, and dedication to her family and community.
Born on April 30, 1959, in La Grande, Oregon, Janet moved to Hermiston, where she graduated from Hermiston High School in 1977. She pursued her higher education at the University of Oregon, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree. Janet’s career path led her to the Department of Transportation and later into advocacy, focusing on civil rights and discrimination, where she made a lasting impact.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Janet was immensely proud of her children, Jeff and Kelsey Gilbertson. Her son Jeff, who serves in the Navy Reserves, and her daughter Kelsey, a devoted mother to Janet’s grandson Camron, were the lights of her life. Janet also shared her home with her loyal cat, Mazie, and her compassion extended to many stray animals, particularly cats, which she often took in and cared for.
Throughout her life, Janet loved the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, often exploring the mountains and hiking trails of Oregon, Washington, and Montana. She also had a passion for sewing, a fun-loving spirit, and a positive outlook that inspired those around her. Her warmth, humor, and commitment to others fostered deep friendships at Desert Sage and beyond.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Carol Hamilton and Roy Pedersen; her brother, Greg Pedersen; and her stepparent, Merl Hamilton. She is survived by her son, Jeff Gilbertson; daughter, Kelsey Gilbertson; grandson, Camron Gilbertson; stepsiblings Carla Hamilton and Joanie Coons; and many extended family members and friends who will remember her warmly.
In honor of Janet’s memory, a fundraiser organized by Catherine Bach has been created to assist her family with the costs of cremation and funeral arrangements. The support so far has been heartfelt, with donations from friends like Deborah Couch, Jeanne Gregory, Margaret Shock, Geri Dickmeier, and Catherine Bach herself.
The community grieves the loss of Janet, a beloved friend, mother, and advocate, and finds solace in the legacy of love and positivity she leaves behind.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
