James Foster, Sebastopol, CA— It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Foster, affectionately known as Jim. Jim devoted his life to supporting queer youth in Sonoma County, significantly impacting many lives through his compassionate work.
As a co-founder of Positive Images, Jim established support groups aimed at helping LGBTQQI youth navigate challenging environments. He played a pivotal role in conducting workshops and speaker panels that confronted homophobia, striving to destigmatize and humanize queer experiences. His dedication extended to mentoring many young individuals, affirming that his efforts truly saved lives. Jim also ran the Santa Rosa High School Peer Counseling program and worked extensively as a family therapist.
Known for his bright spirit, contagious humor, and love for cats and cars, Jim was cherished by those around him. In 2019, he faced a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which necessitated financial support for his medical care. Despite the challenges, Jim remained at home with the help of caregivers.
A fundraiser organized by Christopher Bowers has already raised $755 towards a goal of $5,000, aimed at covering mortuary costs and supporting his primary caretaker, Catalina Chavez. Any remaining funds will go toward a community celebration of Jim’s life.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s family and friends during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift many in the community.
May Jim Foster rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the love and support surrounding them.
