Jack Millard Coulson of Terry, MS, passed away on September 21, 2024, at University Medical Center in Jackson after a prolonged illness. He was 70 years old. Jack was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, and his loss has deeply affected the community.
Jack is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan Hooper Coulson, his three children: Keith Coulson (Melody), Amy Munro Strong (Rob), and Brian Coulson (Tabitha), and his seven grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Coulson, Gavin, Carson, Daniel, Brooklyn, and Cheyenne Strong, and Clara Coulson. Jack’s passion for flying was evident from his early years, completing his first solo flight at the age of 16. After a long career serving the Jackson Police Department and as an expert marksman on the Pistol Team, he returned to his love for aviation, working as a private pilot until health issues forced him to stop.
Jack’s life in Terry, Mississippi, alongside his wife, was filled with warmth and community. The couple turned Capt’n Jack’s Hot Shots Bar on Highway 55 into a local hub where people gathered to share music, food, and friendship. Jack’s love for cooking, especially his signature cheese logs and banana pudding, brought people together, making Hot Shots a beloved part of the neighborhood. Jack’s legacy is also one of generosity, as he frequently organized fundraisers and events to help those in need.
Jack’s memory was honored by many, including Jessica Kinnison, who organized a fundraiser to support his family. Comments from friends and family reflected the deep love and respect people had for him. Colleen Curran described his impact simply as "Beautiful!" while Prudence Barton expressed, "Jess, I am sorry for the loss of your uncle Jack. Thinking of you."
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Sunday, September 29, hosted by the Jackson Scottish Rites Bodies at Capitol Lodge No. 600 in Byram, MS, where Jack was a proud member for many years. His passion for life, love of music, and dedication to family and community will forever be remembered.
