Ira Rosen, known affectionately as Ike to some, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY, Ira was well-loved by his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of vibrant participation and connection.
Ira is survived by his sister Roz, brother-in-law Bob, and his nephews Danny, Josh, and Eddie, along with many other family members, friends, and acquaintances. His charismatic personality, encyclopedic knowledge, and love for life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Edward RosenHanst, a family member, fondly remembered Ira’s unique style, saying, "Ira always dressed like a tropical bird. He always walked to the beat of his own drum. Lived life the way he wanted to live."
As an active participant in several community organizations, including Rainbow Heights Club, SAGE, JACS, Park Slope Jewish Center, and Elder Plan, Ira was known for his dedication to his causes. He was also a passionate writer and reader, with several published books and short stories to his name.
Edward RosenHanst has organized a fundraiser in Ira’s memory to help cover funeral costs, with any additional funds going towards the organizations Ira supported. So far, $100 has been raised towards a goal of $3,000. The family has announced plans for a memorial service in September, inviting both local friends to attend in person and those farther away to join via Zoom.
The community has shared heartfelt tributes to Ira on social media. Samuel Barth wrote, "May his memory, his writings, his smile, and sweet neshomeh be an abiding blessing." Nancy Quinn added, "What a beautifully written tribute. On the occasions we saw Ira over the years, he was always full of life, gregarious and seemed to love a celebration. It was obvious how deeply he loved his family."
We are deeply saddened to hear of Ira Rosen’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
