George M. Woolsey, Homewood, IL—The community mourns the loss of George M. Woolsey, who passed away on October 13, 2024, at the age of 84. George dedicated his life to serving as a Catalog Assistant at the A.C. Buehler Library of Elmhurst University for 30 years and previously worked as a Catalog Librarian at Harvey Public Library for 13 years.
Born in Albany, New York, George was a well-educated and multi-talented individual. He completed his undergraduate studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1962, and the Rhode Island School of Design in 1965. He furthered his education with an MFA from Cornell University in 1968 and earned a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1982.
George was known for his diverse interests. His love for fossil collecting led him to become a member of the Dry Dredgers, a fossil hunting group. He also had a deep passion for music, singing in the South Suburban Master Chorale and serving as a choir member and cantor at Faith Lutheran Church in Homewood. His musical expertise ranged from Renaissance polyphony to Latin jazz, and his background in studio art allowed him to share his knowledge during frequent visits to the Chicago Art Institute.
George is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Mary, and their two sons, John and Benjamin, as well as his grandson, Ezra. He is also remembered by his sister, Abigail Rowley, and his brother, Timothy Woolsey. His family, friends, and community will gather to celebrate his life on December 7th at Faith Lutheran Church in Homewood, IL.
A memorial fundraiser, organized by his son John Woolsey, has been established to support the causes closest to George’s heart, including Elmhurst University and the South Holland Master Chorale. As of now, no donations have been made, but the community is encouraged to contribute and honor George’s legacy.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Woolsey family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you remember and celebrate George’s remarkable life.
