However, the two hikers got lost and failed to return in time for the Christmas holiday.
Despite being an experienced hiker, Eric and his friend were unable to find their way back, and a search and rescue mission was launched. Sadly, the efforts came too late, as Eric passed away from exposure while trying to make his way home. His family expressed deep gratitude for those who assisted in the search over the holiday season.
Eric, originally from Merced, CA, celebrated his 37th birthday just days before his untimely passing on December 21st. He had a passion for nature, hiking, disc golf, and football. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, and his loss has left a void in the hearts of his mother, Gwen Straughter, his sisters Tanika and Felicia Straughter, his nieces Sydney and Rose, and many other family members and friends.
The Straughter family is currently facing the overwhelming financial burden of funeral expenses and travel costs to Portland, Oregon, where Eric lived. A fundraiser has been established to help cover these costs.
