Dr. Calista Ugwu (Nee Anyanwu), originally from Ikeduru in Imo State, Nigeria, passed away on the morning of October 12, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. Her passing at the young age of 31 has left her family, friends, and community deeply saddened.
Calista was a devoted wife, mother of three young children, and a passionate medical doctor. She had recently completed her Master’s in Public Health and passed both PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 exams, which are required for international doctors to practice in the UK. Despite her declining health, she pursued her career goals relentlessly, a testament to her strength and determination.
Born and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Calista pursued her medical education at Madonna University, where she graduated after ten years of rigorous study. Over the past five years, she bravely fought against a recurrent benign breast lump, which tragically turned cancerous. She sought treatments both in Nigeria and the UK, but sadly, her health deteriorated.
Her husband, James Ugwu, now faces the overwhelming financial responsibility of managing funeral costs, ongoing medical expenses, and caring for their three children, all under the age of five. A fundraiser has been organized by Dr. Olasunkanmi Owolabi to help support the family during this devastating time.
The community has come together to show their support, with generous donations from well-wishers. As of today, several anonymous donors have contributed, with the largest donation being £50. This financial aid is crucial in easing the family’s burden as they navigate life without their beloved wife and mother.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Calista’s family, especially her husband and children. May her memory live on through the love and care she provided to those around her. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this painful time.
