Don Gallogly, Portland OR—Community Remembers a Beloved Outdoorsman

Don Gallogly, a cherished member of the Portland running community, passed away unexpectedly three weeks ago, leaving behind a profound sense of loss among his friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. A talented runner and an outdoor enthusiast, Don was known for his extraordinary ability to excel in various distances, ranging from short sprints to ultra-marathons. However, it was his warm, supportive personality that truly endeared him to everyone.

Don joined the Portland Running Co. Race Team in 2017 and quickly became an integral part of the group. His enthusiasm for sharing his favorite activities and places was infectious, and his love for nature was evident during group runs, particularly at Silver Falls State Park, one of his favorite locations. His passing has left a void in the community, which now remembers him through touching tributes.

Hunter Bennett-Daggett shared his thoughts: "Don was a hugely talented runner, excelling at distances from 1 to 100 miles. But far more importantly, he was a wonderful guy, supportive of everyone and always excited to share the activities and places he loved."

In his honor, a local memorial run is being planned in Forest Park, a place Don cherished for its scenic beauty and peaceful trails. Friends and fellow runners are encouraged to gather in his memory, but for those unable to attend, running with loved ones, as Don so often did, is a fitting tribute.

A fundraiser organized by Mariko Tokoyoda has been launched to establish memorial benches in places that Don loved, such as Bush’s Pasture Park and Riverfront City Park in Salem, Oregon. The response has been heartfelt, with donations coming in steadily to honor his memory and to ensure that others can enjoy the natural spaces Don cherished.
