Claire Wilkinson, North Devon—Claire Wilkinson passed away on August 8, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with medullary thyroid cancer. Claire’s journey, marked by her unwavering strength and deep devotion to her family, has left a profound impact on all who knew her.
Claire was diagnosed with a rare form of medullary thyroid cancer in 2002, at the age of 34. Over the years, she underwent numerous surgeries, including a thymectomy, thyroidectomy, neck dissections, and gland removals. Despite the relentless spread of the cancer, Claire continued to fight, even after the disease metastasized to her lungs in 2016. In addition to her cancer, Claire also faced a diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome, adding to the immense challenges she had to endure.
In 2012, Claire and her husband Andy took in their nine-month-old grandson, Mackenzie, under a special guardianship order, demonstrating their boundless love and commitment to their family. This act of selflessness became even more remarkable as they navigated their own health challenges, with Andy suffering a TIA in 2015.
Claire’s health took a severe turn in 2018 when she contracted pneumonia, leading to sepsis and a lengthy stay in intensive care. Despite receiving a terminal diagnosis, Claire chose to participate in a pioneering drug trial, hoping to help others facing similar challenges. For the next five years, she and Andy traveled to London for monthly treatments, funded mostly from their savings.
In May 2024, Claire faced yet another health crisis when she suffered a catastrophic gastrointestinal bleed during a routine appointment in London. Despite multiple blood transfusions and another intensive care stay, Claire fought on, defying the odds once again.
Sadly, last week, the cancer spread to her gallbladder, causing it to rupture. After a short stay in North Devon District Hospital, Claire’s body could no longer fight the infections. She passed away surrounded by her beloved husband Andy and two of her daughters.
Claire’s passing has left her family in a difficult situation. Andy, who had given up work to care for Claire full-time over the past 15 years, now faces financial uncertainty. The loss of their mobility car and the possible loss of their home add to the challenges he and Mackenzie now face.
A fundraiser organized by Emily Yates has been set up to help cover funeral costs and support Andy and Mackenzie during this difficult time. The funds will also help secure Mackenzie’s future, as Andy has promised Claire to provide the best life possible for their grandson.
Claire Wilkinson’s memory will live on through the love she shared with her family and the strength she displayed throughout her life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy, Mackenzie, and the entire family during this difficult time.
