Carmen Torres, affectionately known as "Mama" by her loved ones and the Brooklyn community, passed away on August 31, 2024, after a brave battle with breast cancer. Diagnosed in May 2024 with stage 4 breast cancer, Carmen’s strength and love for her family shone through even during her most challenging times. Despite the heartbreaking losses of her granddaughter to asthma and her daughter to liver disease in recent years, she remained the heart of her family, raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as if they were her own.
Mama was known for her lively spirit, her sassiness, and her ability to bring people together. Her passing leaves a deep void in the lives of those who knew her, as she welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and a warm smile. Her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are grieving her loss, as she was a central figure in their lives.
In honor of Carmen’s life, a fundraiser titled "Support Mama’s Final Send Off" has been organized by Rosanaly Diaz-Scott on behalf of Carmen’s granddaughter, Crystal Castanon. The fundraiser, which aims to raise $7,000 to cover funeral expenses, has already seen $675 in donations from five generous contributors. These donations include $30 from Jovanni Miranda, $300 from Brenda & Jose Roman, $20 from Russell Davis, $300 from Emanuel Almanzar, and $25 from Daniel Martinez.
Mama’s family hopes to provide her with the farewell she deserves, reflecting the love and joy she brought into the world. The support from the community has been a great comfort during this difficult time.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Carmen Torres’ family and friends. May her memory be a source of strength and love for them during this time of mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, and we wish them peace and comfort as they navigate through this immense loss.
