Carlos Lopez, Toronto, ON— It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carlos Lopez. Born in a small town outside Retalhuleu, Nuevo San Carlos, Guatemala, Carlos was 83 years old when he passed away. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and husband whose life was defined by love, resilience, and a tireless work ethic.
Carlos’s journey began in Guatemala, where he worked as a nurse and followed the footsteps of his father, a teacher and political activist. Due to the political unrest in the 1980s, Carlos sought refuge in Canada at the age of 40. In his new homeland, he worked tirelessly for over 25 years as a Facilities Maintenance Supervisor at Hurley Co., under the LiUNA 183 union. Despite language barriers, his dedication to his family and community never wavered.
After retiring at 65, Carlos faced a courageous battle with leukemia, which he managed with strength and determination. Unfortunately, in 2024, after an accident left him with a broken hip, doctors discovered that he had developed aggressive lymphatic cancer in his throat and chest. Despite his resilience, Carlos passed away, leaving his family without the means to cover the funeral expenses.
In an effort to honor his memory, a fundraiser has been organized by his daughter, Gabriela Lopez, to raise $5,000 for a simple cremation. The family is grateful for any contribution, no matter how small, to help cover the costs and provide Carlos with the dignified farewell he deserves.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lopez family as they navigate this difficult time.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Carlos Lopez’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
