Candy Lovely Woods Goodling Coates, Oak Ridge, TN—Candy Lovely Woods Goodling Coates passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 12, 2024. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a faithful servant of her church community. Born on April 12, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Candy dedicated her life to her family, education, and her faith.
Candy’s journey through life was one of dedication and love. She met her first husband, Boyd Goodling, at Bob Jones University, where they began a marriage that lasted over 50 years, sharing a deep commitment to teaching and ministry. After Boyd’s passing in January 2016, Candy found companionship with her second husband, Tom Coates, continuing her devotion to her church and her community.
A lifelong learner and educator, Candy pursued a degree in accounting from Pensacola Christian School after raising her seven children. Her passion for math and teaching led her to various Christian schools across the country, where she touched countless lives with her knowledge and kindness.
Candy was also an avid collector of elephants, a hobby that brought joy to her grandchildren, who would delight in counting her vast collection during their visits. Her love for sewing, drawing house plans, and her unyielding curiosity in mastering new projects exemplified her vibrant and inquisitive spirit.
Candy is survived by five of her seven children: Joel, Joshua, Matthew (Carolyn), Marci (Tim), and Petra (Andrew), as well as 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, along with her sister, Gail McMurry, her brother, Duane (Glenda) Woods, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She is now reunited in heaven with her first husband, Boyd, her second husband, Tom, two of her children, Titus and Timberly, and other beloved family members.
In honor of Candy’s memory, a service will be held at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, located at 1451 Bethel Valley Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to support Candy’s son, Josh, who has been caring for her in her home for the past six years. The family is working to settle her estate, and any contributions to help Josh during this difficult time would be greatly appreciated.
