Brook Cheuvront, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has passed away, leaving her community and loved ones heartbroken. The Avery County native, who was known for her remarkable intelligence and beauty, passed away after being reported missing during a hike at Devil’s Peak in Table Mountain National Park near Cape Town, South Africa. Her body was discovered the following day, and an inquest is currently underway to determine the cause of her passing.
Brook was an exceptional individual, receiving the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship, which enabled her to pursue her studies with full financial support. Her dedication extended beyond her academic achievements, with regular involvement at Morehead throughout the school year. Those who knew Brook admired her for her kind-hearted nature, as she left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
In response to this tragic loss, a fundraiser has been organized by Andrew Okoye to support Brook Cheuvront’s Memorial Fund. He encourages the community to come together and help in any way they can during this difficult time.
Libby Powell, a close friend, shared her heartfelt memories of Brook on Facebook, stating, "Brook Cheuvront was larger than life. She was the kind of person that would make you say, ‘I want to be her when I grow up.’ She was one of the rare Avery County kids who really ‘made it.’ I cannot overstate how beautiful and intelligent she was—someone you only read about or see in movies. This community was lucky enough to see her shine in real life."
Other community members also expressed their grief. George A. Singer Sr. commented, "Libby, my heart breaks for you and her family… may God be with all of you." McKayla Smith wrote, "She was such a sweet soul. My heart breaks for her family and the Avery community." Many others echoed these sentiments, sending prayers and love to Brook’s family.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Brook Cheuvront’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends, and the entire community during this incredibly difficult time.
