Bishop Samuel Malave, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on October 14, 2024, after suffering a massive stroke. His death came as a heartbreaking and unintended consequence of Hurricane Milton. Known for his warmth, wisdom, and devotion to his ministry, Bishop Samuel’s passing has left his family and those who knew him in mourning.
The Bishop had experienced health challenges in the months leading up to his death. In February 2024, he suffered a heart attack that required open heart surgery. Although the surgery was initially successful, complications arose in the form of water in his lungs and an irregular heartbeat. As Bishop Samuel continued to recover, his wife, Myrna, also required open heart surgery, which was performed in early September. The two were healing together when Hurricane Milton struck in early October, leading them to evacuate to the home of his brother, Pastor Edwin Malave, in Alabama.
On October 8, 2024, after the long and exhausting trip to Alabama, Bishop Samuel seemed in good spirits but expressed feeling tired. The following day, he experienced symptoms of a stroke and was immediately rushed to the Erlanger Hospital Neuroscience Trauma ICU in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he passed away on October 14, 2024, at 8:30 p.m.
The stress of the hurricane evacuation and his existing heart condition contributed to the tragic circumstances leading to his death. His wife, Myrna, and their family now face an overwhelming emotional and financial burden.
A fundraiser organized by Pastor Mildred Malave has been set up to cover transportation costs to bring Bishop Samuel’s remains from Tennessee to Haines City, Florida, as well as to cover funeral expenses and assist his widow in this difficult transition. Generous donations have already begun to come in, with Wilfredo Colon contributing $100 and Naomi Napier donating $1,000.
Messages of condolences and prayers have been pouring in from friends and community members. Joe Palm wrote, “I am deeply saddened at the passing of Bishop Samuel Malave. He was such a wonderful man of God. His heart was so tender towards people and his wisdom was abundant." Sherrie L. Gunning, Emily Hernández-Persad, and Edwin Cintron also shared their heartfelt thoughts, expressing sorrow and offering prayers for his family.
Bishop Samuel Malave’s life and ministry touched many, and his legacy will not soon be forgotten. His family and friends take solace in the love and support they have received, and the community will continue to hold them in their prayers.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Malave family. May Bishop Samuel rest in peace, and may God’s peace comfort his family during this time of loss.
